Meaning no ill-will to Dick Cheney and his unfortunate hunting campanion, I have to take a time-out to reflect on yesterday's bird hunting accident. Having hunted birds along the Ohio River, and having learned marksmenship and shooting skills from NRA instructors as a Scout, I have a sensitivity to hunting accidents. One of my father's GM exec pals shot a hunting companion back in the day. So did Adlai Stevenson as a young man. This kind of thing can happen and every hunter is trained against the hazards inherent in hunting flying birds. Cheney is a Westerner who breathes hunting and fishing and the comraderie that accomplishes their pursuit. And as an oil exec he can certainly be given no fault for suiting up with some pals for a hunting outing. But Cheney is not a private sector big shot now, nor is he just a portly rich guy who can do what he likes. He is the Vice President of the US. What the hell is up with this? Who can say it wouldn't be Cheney on the other end of the unfortunately aimed shot? Whose bright idea was it to have this guy with his responsibilities and his job wandering around the South Texas bush with armed 78-year olds! Quillnews opinion: Not good. Not good at all.
